I saw this thing on AOL telling you the ‘best’ shows to watch and I realized that most of them were crap, so I am giving my opinion to an audience that is awaiting with stilled breathe.
I am going to break things up into different catagories so as to better rate them.
Drama
1. Heroes-How do they do it? The writing is real, the characters are real, despite their obvious supernatural abilities the characters are real people with fears, dreams, and destinies. It is filmed like a comic book more often than not and the action moves along at that comic book pace and into its second season it hasn’t lost its pace or its edge, I own the first season so maybe i will let you borrow it, maybe not. The possibilities presented by and dealt with by the show are enormous, they have yet to write themselves into a corner and i don’t think they ever shall. Watch out for the “oh, snap” moments that dominated season one and caused so many addicts to the show, myself included, you could watch the whole first season in a day (tyler did come close and Adam the Red came in at a close second)
2.Life-New show and I put it on here purely for the main character. The plot is like most cop shows, or like house, a guy who goes about things differently and gets amazing results yawn i know, it is rather cliched but the character is played so well as to remove all thoughts of the cliche from your mind and simply enjoy him unfolding who he is and who he has affected around him. Plus it moved past BSG, that could just be because BSG isn’t on now but it also could be because i like the show so much, only time will tell.
3.Battle Star Galactica-I know a science fiction show on my top five? what? Yeah but it is probably the most relavant show on television right now, perhaps next to Heroes, it shows us what humanity is, a subject we should be spending more time individually and collectively exploring.
4. Friday Night Lights- at least the first season, i haven’t really warmed too well to the second season but i need to give it another try soon.
5. Lost- Now that they have a fixed ending date for the show, i believe the episodes will be more pointed in explaining mysteries and resolving conflict more quickly than not so as to end well.
Comedy
1. The Office- Whatever those Scrantonites have to drink, i want some for my co-workers, it would make my workplace much more interesting. A Great choice to Keep Ed Helms on as Andy Bernard, your best friend, who seems just like you do and has issues with being excluded. I like watching him but i am glad i don’t have anyone like him in my life. Anyways the whole gang is back with the romance between pam and Jim finally happening, i kinda miss that akward longing and not saying what they want to say, and Jim’s heartbreaking looks, but i guess this is good too. Anyways the writing is as awkward as every and we are seeing Jim develop a bit and it should just be interesting to see how it all works out, I love this show and i curse nbc for cancelling their contract with itunes but am glad that they are at least streaming it on their website.
2. How I met your Mother- This is on CBS, not particularly well known for their comedy but they excel in this show. In its third season, with the other two being out on DVD, the whole cast returns in this “Love story in reverse” which has some oddly healthy views on romanticism sometimes. They have the hapless everyman who is searching for his wife amongst the vast hordes of women that populate NYC, his ex who still hangs out with them, they dated last season, thankfully that relationship is over, Robin, her character is weak and now she can develop more indepenedently of that relationship. Douggie Hauser returns to television as guy who has game, he is, in my opinion the funniest on the show, runner up is the character ‘marshal’ who plays a similar role to the role he played in Freaks and Geeks, it is a well written, well timed sharp, witty comedy with a message that you have to go through some stuff before you are to find the one you belong with.
3. Scrubs-Sigh a seventh season, i had hoped that last season would be their last, but i found myself watching their season premier, out of curiousity and finding that it is getting back to the style when it was in its prime, 3rd season, less over the top and more grounded, this is a show that i am excited to see each week.
4. 30 Rock-The Baldwin, amazing cameos, not over playing Tracy Jordan, the show is able to stay on message of mocking an SNL type skit as well as its backers, its a show that i feel will only get better with this season.
5. Chuck-An hour comedy? Yeah thats what i thought too but it turns out that as the season continues it just gets better, in the beginning it seemed doomed to fail due to bad acting or just uncertainty but it has a good quality to it.
Honorable Mention-CSI Miami-This show is ridiculous, it stars David Caruso who overplays every line every glance, as if he is trying to kill the wrong doers of Miami by simply Dramatizing them to death, i mean come on, a man that serious all the time would have died many years ago. You might say well what about Gary Sinise in CSI:NY isn’t the problem with both of these just that they can’t follow in Grissom’s footsteps? Well no Gary Sinise is a fine and polished actor who, being included as producer makes sure that, there isn’t a tired old plot like in CSI: Miami.
I am going to plug two shows which none of you are allowed to see i am serious, please do not watch thes two shows, because it will offend you, i promise. I just like them so much that i need to plug them to ease my conscious. Ok so you know how HBO has been getting rid of all its good shows and now looks like showtime did a few years ago? Well Showtime hasn’t been idle they have developed many good shows the two that i am going to memtion are Dexter, your friendly neighborhood serial killer, the show toys with your emotions and empathy that you do like Dexter and root for him, in spite of his actions, the supporting cast creates a human tapestry against which his emotionally empty character has a chance to stand out. The Second show is Weeds, it is about a Suburban californian mom who suddenly lost her husband and is dealing weed in order to maintain her and her two kids lifestyles, it is a show that is addictive like its namesake, well so i have heard, but the episodes are a mere 21 minutes and you find yourselve ripping through a season in what seems like minutes.
alright if you have any shows you want my opinion about you can facebook me, email me, or call me, if you have my number that is.
